Most sessions are held jointly, with both partners present, though your therapist may occasionally suggest individual check-ins to understand each partner's perspective more fully. Work typically progresses from understanding the current pattern, to processing what's underneath it — hurt, fear, unmet needs — to practising new ways of communicating and repairing.
