Depression - The Meeting Matters

What is Depression?

Depression also known as Major Depressive Disorder is a mood disorder characterized by low mood and aversion to activity. Three in every 10 adults which makes 29% have been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lives. Depression can occur at any time of life but it is more prevalent in the late teens to mid-20s.

Symptoms

Symptoms of depression are divided into two categories, Cognitive and behavioral. When we talk about cognitive symptoms we mean distorted thought processes. For instance, a person with depression might feel a sense of hopelessness and helplessness. They might also feel worthless and excessive guilt. They are irritable, sad, and feel lonely. They lose pleasure and interest in activities they once used to enjoy. They also suffer from suicidal ideation. People also have difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, and making decisions.

The behavioral changes a depressed person may experience include fatigue and lethargy—decreased energy, loss of appetite, and insomnia.

Depression in adults/children

People of all ages can experience depression. There is a particular difference between depression in children and depression in adults. The diagnostic criteria are similar for all age groups and so are the treatments and interventions.

Causes

Depression can have many causes, it can be biological, social, and psychological factors. Some are discussed below.

Major life changes can also cause depression in some individuals. Even if the change was planned it can be overwhelming for some people and it’s hard for them to navigate through these changes. Similarly, if a person uses drugs can also experience symptoms of depression.

Individuals with low economic backgrounds tend to suffer from depression as well. Moreover, if an individual is suffering from a life-threatening illness such as cancer chronic pain etc can also experience depression.

Risk factors

Genetic:

Individuals with depression in their family are most likely to suffer from it at some point in their lives.

Personality:

People with generally pessimistic personalities and low self-esteem are also prone to depression. Individuals who get overwhelmed and stressed out easily are also at higher risk.

Environment:

People who experience abuse, violence, or poverty can develop depression. Likewise, children who suffer from neglect from their parents are also at a higher risk of depression.

Biochemical:

Imbalance in different chemicals in the Brain such as serotonin,  dopamine, etc can also contribute to symptoms of depression.

Treatment

Medication can be used in treating depression as it balances the chemical imbalance in the Brain which can ultimately help elevate symptoms of depression. Moreover, therapeutic interventions such as CBT are also one of the most effective treatments for depression. It is also evidence-based therapy and the most researched as well.
