Toxic Relationship Signs: 12 Red Flags and What to Do

A relationship is toxic when it regularly leaves you feeling afraid, small, controlled or exhausted instead of safe and respected. Every couple argues. In a toxic relationship there is a pattern of disrespect, control, blame, manipulation or fear. If you are afraid of your partner, are being hurt or threatened, or are cut off from family and friends, your safety comes first.

12 Signs of a Toxic Relationship

1. Constant criticism or put-downs. 2. Control over where you go, who you see or your phone and money. 3. Jealousy and accusations. 4. Blame: everything is your fault. 5. Silent treatment or punishment. 6. Gaslighting: being told you are imagining things. 7. Walking on eggshells. 8. Isolation from family or friends. 9. Threats, including threats to leave or harm. 10. Disrespect in front of others. 11. Apologies that are followed by the same behaviour. 12. Feeling worse about yourself over time.

Toxic or Just Unhappy?

In a difficult but healthy relationship both people can disagree, repair and feel respected. In a toxic one, one person tends to control or demean the other, and repair does not happen. Counseling can help many troubled couples, but not where there is abuse. See is marriage counseling worth it.

Emotional Abuse in Marriage

Emotional abuse includes humiliation, threats, controlling money, isolating you, constant monitoring and using religion, children or family honour as pressure. It leaves no marks but causes anxiety, depression and loss of self-worth.

What You Can Do

Tell someone you trust, keep important documents and contact details safe, write down incidents, and think about a safe place to go if needed. Individual counseling helps you see the pattern, set boundaries and decide your next step without pressure. See our toxic relationship counseling page.
