Separation Anxiety in Children: Therapy and Parent Guidance

It is normal for young children to cry when a parent leaves. It becomes a problem when the fear is intense, lasts for weeks and starts to affect school, sleep or family life. The Meeting Matters offers child psychology for separation anxiety, online across Pakistan and in person in Islamabad, with parent guidance built into every plan.

Signs of Separation Anxiety

A child may cling, cry or panic when a parent leaves, refuse to go to school, complain of stomach aches or headaches before separation, worry that something bad will happen to a parent, refuse to sleep alone, or have nightmares about being apart. Some children follow a parent from room to room. If these last for several weeks and are out of proportion to the child's age, it is worth speaking to a psychologist.

What Causes It

There is rarely one cause. Common triggers include starting school, a move, an illness, the loss of a relative, a new baby, parental separation, or a frightening event. Some children are naturally more anxious, and anxiety can run in families. It is not caused by "bad parenting", although how parents respond can make it better or worse.

How Therapy Helps

We work with the child and with you. For younger children, sessions use play, drawing and stories to help them name their worries and practise calming skills. Older children learn to notice anxious thoughts and test them gently. Parents get a clear plan for goodbyes, bedtime and school mornings, so that the child gradually builds confidence. School Refusal

When separation anxiety keeps a child at home, the aim is a steady, supported return to school, not a forced one. We help you plan with teachers, and agree small steps that build tolerance. See also child behavioral therapy and counselling for school stress.

What You Can Do at Home

Keep goodbyes short, calm and predictable. Do not sneak out. Praise brave behaviour. Avoid giving in to avoidance, since that tends to strengthen the fear. Keep routines steady, and listen to worries without dismissing them. Our guide to signs your child may need to see a psychologist explains when to ask for help.

Online or in Islamabad

Sessions are online by secure video, or in person at our F-11/1 clinic in Islamabad, in English, Urdu or Punjabi, with evening and weekend slots around school hours. Sessions start from PKR 5,000, and the fee is the same online or in person. See child psychology at The Meeting Matters.
