Grief: What It Feels Like, the Stages and How to Cope

Grief is the natural response to losing someone or something important. It can include sadness, numbness, anger, guilt, anxiety, tiredness and trouble sleeping, and it comes in waves rather than a straight line. The five stages (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) describe common experiences, but you do not go through them in order, and there is no correct timetable. Grief becomes a reason to seek help when it stays overwhelming, stops you functioning for many months, or you feel unable to go on.

Common Grief Symptoms

Emotional: sadness, longing, numbness, anger, guilt, relief mixed with guilt, anxiety. Physical: exhaustion, headaches, aches, changes in appetite and broken sleep. Thinking: difficulty concentrating, preoccupation with the person, disbelief. Behaviour: withdrawing, crying, or keeping busy to avoid feeling. All of these can be part of normal grief.

The Five Stages of Grief

Denial (this cannot be happening), anger (at yourself, others or the situation), bargaining ("if only"), depression (deep sadness and withdrawal) and acceptance (learning to live with the loss). They were described as common experiences, not steps. People move back and forth, skip some, and feel several at once.

How Long Does Grief Last?

There is no set time. The most intense pain often eases over the first months, but grief can return around anniversaries, Eid, birthdays and reminders, sometimes years later. This is normal. If after a long period you still cannot function, feel numb or stuck, or avoid everything linked to the loss, support can help.

Grief After a Loss in the Family

In many Pakistani families, grief is shared and also hidden. Funeral rituals, duties to the family and the expectation to "be strong" can leave little space to feel. The loss of a parent, spouse or child, a sudden death or a loss by illness or violence can bring complicated grief. Counseling offers a private space to grieve in your own way.

What Helps

Let yourself feel without judging it, keep basic routines (sleep, food, a little movement), talk to someone who listens without fixing, take part in remembrance in a way that feels right, and avoid big decisions early on. Therapy can help you make sense of the loss and find a way to carry it. See our pages on depression, PTSD and trauma therapy and online counseling.
