The Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) are two of the most widely researched approaches to couples therapy. The Gottman Method builds friendship, manages conflict and strengthens shared meaning; EFT helps partners understand and change the emotional cycle that keeps them stuck. The Meeting Matters uses both with couples in Islamabad, across Pakistan and online worldwide.
Ready to talk to someone?
Developed from decades of research on how couples interact, the Gottman Method focuses on practical skills: building fondness and admiration, turning towards each other in everyday moments, softening how difficult conversations begin, managing conflict without contempt or defensiveness, and creating shared goals and meaning.
EFT looks beneath the arguments to the emotions and needs driving them — usually a cycle in which one partner pursues and the other withdraws. By helping both partners voice their vulnerable feelings and respond to each other differently, it builds a more secure emotional bond.
You do not have to choose. Your therapist draws on each depending on what your relationship needs — Gottman-style skills for communication and conflict, EFT for deeper emotional distance and trust. The first sessions are used to understand your pattern and agree on a plan.
Most work is in joint sessions, with the occasional individual check-in where useful. Expect practical exercises you can use the same week alongside the deeper work. Some couples see meaningful change in six to eight focused sessions; others prefer ongoing support.
Both approaches work well over secure video. Couples in Lahore, Karachi and across Pakistan, as well as Pakistani couples in the UK, Canada, the US and the Gulf, attend online; local couples can meet at our F-11/1 Islamabad clinic.
