Bipolar Disorder Symptoms: How It Differs From Ordinary Mood Swings

Bipolar disorder involves distinct episodes of unusually high or irritable mood (mania or hypomania) and episodes of depression, each lasting days to weeks and clearly different from your usual self. Ordinary mood swings change within hours and follow events. Bipolar disorder needs a proper assessment and usually medical care from a psychiatrist, with therapy alongside.

Symptoms of a Manic or Hypomanic Episode

Much less need for sleep without feeling tired, unusually high energy, an elevated or very irritable mood, racing thoughts, talking fast, big plans, inflated confidence, impulsive spending or risky behaviour, and being easily distracted. Mania can be severe and may need urgent medical care.

Symptoms of the Depressive Episodes

Low mood, loss of interest, tiredness, sleeping too much or too little, guilt, poor concentration and hopelessness. See our page on depression symptoms.

Bipolar or Mood Swings?

Everyone has moods that change. In bipolar disorder the changes last days or weeks, come with changes in sleep, energy and behaviour, and are noticed by others. Frequent rapid mood changes with relationship difficulties can also be related to other issues, which an assessment can clarify. See mood swings treatment.

How Treatment Works

Bipolar disorder is usually treated with medication prescribed by a psychiatrist, combined with therapy that helps you understand your pattern, keep regular routines and sleep, spot early warning signs and manage stress. We are psychologists and do not prescribe medication. If a medical opinion would help, we will say so and work alongside your doctor or psychiatrist. Read more on our bipolar disorder page.
