What Is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, often called talk therapy, is a structured, confidential process in which a trained professional helps you understand your thoughts, feelings and behaviour, and change what is not working. It is used for anxiety, OCD, depression, trauma, relationship problems, anger, grief and many other difficulties. A psychotherapist works through conversation and practical exercises, not medication. We do not prescribe medication. If a medical opinion would help, we will say so.

Meet Our Senior Psychotherapist

Professor Dr. Asghar Ali Shah is the Professor and Head of the Psychology Department at Preston University, Islamabad, and a former Chairman of the Department of Psychology at International Islamic University, Islamabad. He holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Peshawar, has 38 years of experience in psychology and has been in private psychotherapy practice since 1991. He has seen more than 3,000 clients, has more than 10,000 hours of clinical experience and has published more than 30 research papers. He sees clients on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 10 AM to 8 PM. What Psychotherapy Can Help With

People come to us for OCD, anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, marriage and relationship difficulties, stress and burnout, anger, grief and loss, low self-esteem, sleep problems, and concerns about their children and teenagers. You do not need a diagnosis to start. The first session is a conversation about what is happening and what you would like to change.

How Psychotherapy Works Here

The first session is a careful assessment: what brought you in, how long it has been going on, what you have tried and what you want. Together you agree a plan, usually weekly sessions at first, and review progress as you go. Sessions are private and confidential. Outcomes differ from person to person, and no particular result can be guaranteed. We will tell you honestly if we think another kind of help would suit you better.

Individual, Couple and Family Psychotherapy

Individual sessions are one to one. Couples can work on communication, trust and conflict together, see marriage counseling in Islamabad. Family sessions help when a problem affects everyone at home. Parents of children and teenagers can also have guidance sessions alongside the child's therapy.

In Person at F-11/1 or Online

Our clinic is at House 66, Street 73, F-11/1, Islamabad. Sessions are also available online by secure video, in Urdu, English or Punjabi. Professor Shah also speaks Hindko, Saraiki and Pashto. See our pages on a psychologist in Islamabad and a clinical psychologist in Islamabad.

Choosing a Psychotherapist: What to Ask

Ask about their qualifications and where they trained, how long they have practised, what kinds of problems they usually see, how they will assess you, how progress is reviewed, and how your privacy is protected. A good psychotherapist will answer plainly and will not promise a guaranteed result. Our team's qualifications and experience are published on each profile.

Book a Session

Message us on WhatsApp or send an appointment request. We usually reply within about 30 minutes and will suggest the right psychotherapist for you.

“I am truly grateful to Ms. Tasmiya Asghar and the team at Meeting Matters. I reached out during one of the most difficult periods of my life while dealing with grief and trying to be the best parent I could be for my children. Ms. Tasmiya's kindness, empathy, and guidance helped me navigate emotions that often felt overwhelming. She helped me understand my feelings, regain perspective, and think through practical ways of supporting my children and myself. I always felt respected, heard, and comfortable during our sessions.
