Trauma Symptoms: Signs, Childhood Trauma and What Helps

Trauma symptoms are the lasting effects of a frightening, harmful or overwhelming experience. They include flashbacks or nightmares, feeling constantly on guard, jumpiness, avoiding reminders, numbness, guilt or shame, trouble sleeping and difficulty trusting others. Trauma is not only war or accidents. It includes abuse, neglect, violence, sudden loss and painful experiences in childhood. Trauma is treatable.

Common Trauma Symptoms

Intrusive memories, flashbacks or nightmares; avoiding places, people or topics; feeling numb or detached; being easily startled or always on alert; anger or irritability; shame, guilt or self-blame; sleep problems; and physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach pain.

Childhood Trauma Symptoms in Adults

Difficulty trusting, fear of abandonment or closeness, people-pleasing, anger, emotional numbness, low self-worth, anxiety, depression, and repeating painful patterns in relationships. Childhood trauma can follow abuse, neglect, harsh punishment, witnessing violence, a parent's illness or loss, or growing up in constant conflict. See childhood trauma therapy.

Can an Online Trauma Test Tell Me?

Questionnaires can show how much a past experience may be affecting you, but they cannot diagnose PTSD or other trauma conditions. If answers worry you, speak to a psychologist. Assessment is gentle and paced, and you will not be asked to relive everything.

Treatment That Works

Trauma-focused CBT, prolonged exposure and EMDR have the strongest evidence. Treatment usually starts with safety and coping skills before working on memories. See PTSD and trauma therapy. We are psychologists and do not prescribe medication. If a medical opinion would help, we will say so and work alongside your doctor or psychiatrist.
