Selective Mutism in Children: Gentle Therapy and Parent Guidance

Some children talk freely at home but fall silent at school, with relatives or in public. This is not shyness or stubbornness. Selective mutism is an anxiety-related difficulty in which speaking feels impossible in certain places. The Meeting Matters offers child psychology for selective mutism, online and in Islamabad, with parent guidance and a plan for school.

What Selective Mutism Looks Like

A child may speak normally at home but not at school, may whisper or point, freeze when asked a question, or avoid eye contact in unfamiliar places. It often shows up when a child starts school. The child wants to speak but cannot. Pressure to talk usually makes it worse.

Why It Happens

Selective mutism is linked to anxiety, and many children are naturally sensitive or slow to warm up. Some also have language or hearing difficulties, which is why a careful assessment matters. It is not caused by parenting, and it is not a choice.

How Therapy Helps

Treatment focuses on lowering anxiety and building comfort in small steps, without forcing speech. Sessions start with the child feeling safe, then gradually move through non-verbal communication, whispering, and speaking, in situations that feel manageable. Parents and teachers are part of the plan. For younger children we use play-based methods.

Working With the School

The school plays a big part. We help you explain the difficulty to teachers, agree on low-pressure ways for your child to take part, and avoid well-meant pressure to speak. A consistent approach between home and school speeds progress.

When to Get an Assessment

If your child has been silent in specific settings for more than a month, and it is affecting school or friendships, an assessment is worthwhile. A psychologist can look at anxiety, development and communication. See our page on psychological assessment.

Online or in Islamabad

Many children find it easier to start online from the safety of home. Sessions are held by secure video or in person at our F-11/1 clinic in Islamabad, in English, Urdu or Punjabi. Sessions start from PKR 5,000.
