Overthinking is a pattern of repetitive thinking that is hard to switch off — replaying the past (rumination) or rehearsing worst-case futures (worry) — which drains energy, disrupts sleep and makes decisions harder. It is usually a symptom of underlying anxiety, stress or low mood rather than a flaw in character. The Meeting Matters offers evidence-based therapy for overthinking in Islamabad and online across Pakistan.
Ready to talk to someone?
Replaying conversations and decisions, imagining every way something could go wrong, struggling to make even small choices, needing constant reassurance, lying awake with a racing mind, or feeling mentally exhausted without having done anything. It often shows up around relationships, family expectations, work, health and the future.
Overthinking tends to grow out of anxiety, perfectionism, past painful experiences, uncertainty or stress, and it feels useful — as though thinking harder will keep you safe — even when it is making things worse. Understanding that loop is the first step to loosening it.
CBT helps you notice thinking traps such as catastrophising and mind-reading and test them against reality. Mindfulness-based skills build the ability to notice a thought without following it, and DBT-style skills help you tolerate uncertainty and strong emotion. Your therapist chooses the mix that fits your pattern.
Persistent overthinking can accompany generalised anxiety, OCD, depression or unresolved trauma. Part of the first session is working out which of these, if any, is involved, so treatment targets the real driver rather than just the symptom.
Sessions are practical: you leave with specific techniques to try between appointments, and your therapist reviews what is working and adjusts. Many people notice a difference in how they handle racing thoughts within the first few weeks.
