How to Choose a Career: A 10-Question Self-Check

To choose a career, look at four things together: what interests you, what you are good at, what matters to you, and what is realistic for you right now. The 10 questions below help you sort these out. This is a thinking tool, not a test, and it cannot tell you the one right career. It gives you a clearer shortlist to discuss with family or a counselor.

Interests (Questions 1 to 3)

1. Which school or college subjects do you enjoy even when they are hard? 2. What do you read, watch or learn about in your free time? 3. If you had a free day, what kind of work would you happily do for hours?

Strengths (Questions 4 to 6)

4. What do teachers and friends say you are good at? 5. In which subjects do your marks match your effort? 6. Do you prefer working with people, ideas, numbers, hands-on tasks or creative work?

Values (Questions 7 to 8)

7. What matters most to you in work: stability, income, helping others, independence, creativity or status? 8. What kind of day do you want: office, field, clinic, classroom, online, or a mix?

Reality Check (Questions 9 to 10)

9. What are your practical limits right now: marks, entry tests, family finances, location? 10. If your first choice does not work out, what is a second path you would still be happy with?

What to Do With Your Answers

Write your answers down, circle the themes that repeat, and match them to two or three fields. Then research each: what the study path is, what the work looks like, and what the job market is like. Talk to someone who works in each field. Guides to help: what to study after matric and career after FSc.

When to Talk to a Counselor

If your answers pull in different directions, if family expectations are strong, or if worry about the future is making it hard to think, a conversation with a counselor can help. See career counseling, career counseling for students and career counseling in Pakistan.
