Many couples are unsure about online marriage counselling. Can a counsellor really help through a screen? Will it feel awkward? Is it private? This guide answers those questions and explains how to prepare, so your first session is useful.
Does Online Marriage Counselling Work?
Research on online therapy suggests it can be about as effective as in-person therapy for many people and many kinds of problem, including relationship difficulties. What matters most is not the screen but the same things that matter in any counselling: a well-trained counsellor, a method that fits your problem, and both partners being willing to take part. If one partner joins unwillingly or the relationship is in crisis for reasons that need more support, online sessions may not be enough on their own, and a good counsellor will tell you so.
Who Online Sessions Suit
- Couples in cities with few counsellors, or where the right counsellor is in another city.
- Couples where one partner travels often or lives abroad. Both of you can join from different places.
- Pakistani couples in the UK, the UAE or elsewhere who want a counsellor who speaks Urdu or Punjabi and understands family and faith.
- Couples who would rather not be seen going to a clinic, or who cannot manage the travel.
When In-Person Is Better
- If there is violence, threats or fear at home. Safety comes first, and this needs a careful conversation with the clinic before any joint session.
- If you cannot find a private space or a stable connection.
- If you simply prefer to be in the room with the counsellor. That is a fair reason to choose in person.
How to Prepare for Your First Online Session
- Choose a private space. A room where you will not be interrupted, with the door closed. Use headphones if others are at home.
- Sit together if you are in the same place. One screen, both visible. If you are in different places, each of you needs your own device and space.
- Check the basics. A stable connection, a charged device, and the camera and microphone working. Join a few minutes early.
- Agree on simple ground rules. No interrupting, no leaving the call angrily, and honesty even when it is uncomfortable.
- Think about what you want. It helps to know, in a sentence each, what you hope will change.
- Mind the time zone. If one of you is abroad, confirm the time for both countries when you book.
What Happens in the First Session
The first session is a conversation. The counsellor asks what is going on, how long it has been happening and what each of you wants. You do not need to prepare a speech, and nobody expects you to agree. By the end you should have a sense of how the counsellor works and a plan for the next few sessions. Some couples continue weekly, others fortnightly, depending on the problem and the schedule.
Privacy and Confidentiality
Sessions should use a secure video platform and be confidential, with exceptions only where there is a risk of serious harm. Choose a counsellor who explains this clearly at the start.
