Depression Therapy in Pakistan: Treatment Options and What to Expect

If you have been feeling low, empty or exhausted for weeks, you may have wondered whether it is "just stress" or something that needs treatment, and where to go in Pakistan if it is. Depression is common, it is treatable, and most people who get proper support feel noticeably better. This guide explains what depression therapy involves, what to expect, and how to start.

What Is Depression, and How Is It Different From Sadness?

Sadness is a normal response to loss or disappointment and usually eases with time. Depression is a persistent state that affects how you think, feel and function, for most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks. Common signs include low mood, loss of interest, constant tiredness, sleep and appetite changes, trouble concentrating, feelings of worthlessness and, in some people, thoughts of not wanting to be here. Our article on the signs of depression versus normal sadness goes through these in more detail.

Treatment Options for Depression

  • Psychotherapy (talk therapy). Working regularly with a trained psychologist is the main treatment for mild to moderate depression and an important part of treatment for severe depression.
  • Medication. Antidepressants are prescribed by a psychiatrist or doctor, not by a psychologist. They are often helpful for moderate to severe depression, and are sometimes combined with therapy. See psychologist vs psychiatrist for who does what.
  • Lifestyle support. Regular sleep, daylight, movement and social contact do not replace treatment, but they make it work better.

Types of Therapy Used for Depression

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Helps you notice and change the thinking patterns and behaviours that keep low mood going. It is structured and practical, which many people prefer. How CBT actually works explains the process.
  • Behavioural activation. Gradually rebuilding activities that give a sense of meaning or enjoyment, even when motivation is low.
  • Psychodynamic and supportive therapy. Explores deeper patterns, past experiences and relationships that feed depression.
  • Mindfulness-based approaches. Useful for people whose depression returns, by changing how you relate to low-mood thoughts.

A good psychologist chooses the approach with you, rather than using the same method for everyone. Read more on our depression therapy page.

What Happens in the First Session?

The first session is mostly a conversation. Your psychologist will ask what has been happening, how long it has gone on, how it affects your sleep, work and relationships, and what you hope will change. You do not need to prepare anything. It is normal to feel nervous. Our guide to what to expect in your first therapy session walks through it step by step.

How Long Does Therapy for Depression Take?

It varies. Many people notice some improvement within the first four to eight sessions, and a typical course for mild to moderate depression is often a few months of weekly or fortnightly sessions. More complex or long-standing depression may take longer. A good psychologist reviews progress with you regularly rather than asking you to commit to a fixed number of sessions in advance.

Online or In Person?

Both work well for most people. Online sessions suit anyone who finds it hard to leave the house, lives outside Islamabad, or wants more privacy. Our article on whether online therapy is as effective as in-person covers the evidence. At The Meeting Matters you can see a psychologist in person at our F-11/1 clinic in Islamabad, or online from Lahore, Karachi and anywhere else in Pakistan.

What Does Depression Therapy Cost in Pakistan?

Fees depend on the clinician and session type. At our clinic sessions start from PKR 5,000, with 20% off for students. See how much therapy costs in Pakistan for what affects the price and how to get good care at a fair cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can depression be treated without medication?

For many people with mild to moderate depression, therapy alone is effective. For moderate to severe depression a doctor may recommend medication alongside therapy. Only a doctor or psychiatrist can advise on medication.

Is depression a sign of weak faith or weak character?

No. Depression is a health condition with biological, psychological and social causes. Faith can be a real source of strength during recovery, and many people find that therapy and faith support each other. See whether therapy is allowed in Islam.

How do I know if I need therapy or just rest?

If low mood, loss of interest or exhaustion lasts more than two weeks and affects your daily life, it is worth speaking to a professional. A first session can help you decide.

Will my family find out?

No. Sessions are confidential, and nothing is shared without your consent except where there is a serious risk of harm.
