Almost everyone has weeks when they feel flat, tired or hopeless. Often that passes. Sometimes it does not, and it is hard to know from the inside which one you are dealing with. This guide explains the signs that suggest depression rather than ordinary sadness, how it can look different from person to person, and what to do next.
Sadness vs Depression: The Main Differences
- Cause and duration. Sadness usually has a clear cause and eases over days or a couple of weeks. Depression lasts at least two weeks, often much longer, and can appear without an obvious reason.
- Range of feeling. In sadness you can still enjoy things for a moment, such as a good meal or a friend's company. In depression, enjoyment can feel switched off.
- Effect on daily life. Depression makes ordinary tasks like getting up, working, studying or replying to messages feel very heavy.
- Self-worth. Depression often brings strong guilt, shame or the belief that you are a burden. Sadness usually does not.
Common Signs of Depression
Emotional: persistent low or empty mood, irritability, hopelessness, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, feeling numb.
Physical: constant tiredness, sleeping far too much or too little, big changes in appetite or weight, aches or headaches with no clear medical cause.
Thinking: trouble concentrating or deciding, harsh self-criticism, negative thoughts you cannot switch off, thoughts that life is not worth living.
Behaviour: withdrawing from family and friends, missing work or classes, neglecting your appearance or responsibilities.
Having a few of these for a short time is common. Having several most days for two weeks or more is a reason to seek help.
How Depression Can Look Different
- In men, depression often shows as anger, irritability, overworking, risk-taking or physical complaints, and is easily missed because men are expected not to talk about feelings.
- In women, it may come with anxiety, guilt, or appear after childbirth. See our page on postpartum depression.
- In teenagers, it may look like mood swings, anger, falling grades, sleeping all day or pulling away from friends. See helping a teenager with social media anxiety for related warning signs.
- In children, it may look like stomach aches, clinginess, irritability or loss of interest in play. Read signs your child may need therapy.
- "Smiling" depression. Some people keep functioning and appear fine while feeling empty inside.
Is It Depression, Anxiety or Burnout?
They overlap, and many people have more than one. Depression is mostly about low mood and loss of interest. Anxiety is mostly about worry and fear. Burnout is tied to long-term work stress and often improves with rest and change at work, while depression usually does not. A psychologist can help sort out which applies.
What Helps
- Tell someone. One trusted person is enough to start. Saying it aloud reduces its weight.
- Keep a basic routine. Wake at the same time, get daylight, eat regularly and take a short walk, even when you do not feel like it.
- Do one small thing. Depression tells you nothing is worth doing. Choose one tiny task and finish it.
- Limit alcohol and late nights. Both make mood worse.
- Get professional help. Therapy is effective and you do not need to be at breaking point. Read depression therapy in Pakistan: what to expect.
Supporting Someone Who May Be Depressed
Listen without trying to fix or lecture. Avoid "just be positive" or "others have it worse". Ask how they are in a calm way, offer practical help, and gently encourage them to see a professional. If they talk about hurting themselves, take it seriously and get help immediately.
When It Is Urgent
If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide or self-harm, do not wait. Go to the nearest hospital emergency department, call 1122, or stay with the person and call a family member or doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should low mood last before I seek help?
If it lasts two weeks or more, or if it is severe or affecting your work and relationships, it is worth speaking to a professional sooner rather than later.
Can depression go away on its own?
Mild episodes sometimes improve, but depression often returns or deepens without support. Treatment shortens the episode and lowers the chance of it coming back.
Is depression the same as being lazy?
No. Depression drains energy and motivation. What looks like laziness is usually an illness, not a choice.
Can a psychologist diagnose depression?
A clinical psychologist can assess and diagnose depression. A psychiatrist, who is a medical doctor, can also prescribe medication if needed.
