Psychologist, Therapist or Counselor: Which One Do You Need?

If you are searching for help, you will see the words psychologist, therapist and counselor used almost interchangeably. They overlap a great deal, and the right choice depends more on what you need than on the title. This guide explains the differences in plain terms so you can choose with confidence.

What Is a Psychologist?

A psychologist is trained in the science of human thought, emotion and behaviour. A clinical psychologist is further trained to assess and treat mental health difficulties, and can carry out formal assessments, for example for ADHD or autism, as well as deliver therapy. Psychologists do not prescribe medication.

What Is a Therapist?

"Therapist" is a broad umbrella term for anyone who provides talk therapy, such as CBT, DBT or family therapy. A psychologist who delivers therapy is a therapist, but the term can also cover other trained professionals. It describes what someone does rather than a specific qualification.

What Is a Counselor?

A counselor typically offers focused, often shorter-term support for specific concerns such as relationships, stress, career decisions, grief or life transitions. The term is also commonly used for marriage, couples and family work.

What About a Psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and prescribe medication. Many people benefit from seeing both a psychiatrist and a psychologist. We explain this in detail in our article on psychologist vs psychiatrist.

Which One Do You Need?

  • Anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD or a diagnosis question: start with a clinical psychologist.
  • A relationship, marriage or family concern: a counselor or psychologist experienced in couples and family work.
  • A career or life-direction question: a career counselor or psychologist.
  • Concerns about a child: a child psychologist.
  • Possible need for medication: a psychiatrist, ideally working alongside your psychologist.

In practice, a good practice will match you with the right person whichever term you searched for. At The Meeting Matters, our team of psychologists covers all of these areas.

What to Check Before You Book

  • Qualifications: ask about their degree and clinical training, for example in clinical psychology.
  • Approach: ask what methods they use, such as CBT, DBT or EFT, and why.
  • Experience with your concern: a good professional can describe how they work with it.
  • Fit: you should feel listened to and not judged. It is fine to ask for a short intro conversation first.
  • Confidentiality and fees: these should be explained clearly up front.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a psychologist better than a therapist?

Not necessarily. A psychologist is a specific qualification, while therapist describes the work. What matters is training, approach and fit.

Can a counselor treat depression or anxiety?

Often yes, depending on training. For diagnosis questions or more complex difficulties, a clinical psychologist is usually the better starting point.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with a psychologist at The Meeting Matters.
