When organisations in Pakistan think about employee benefits, the usual list is familiar: salary, bonuses, health insurance, provident fund and similar benefits. Mental health support is still missing from many of these packages, even though stress, burnout and family pressure are some of the most common reasons capable people struggle at work.
Why It Belongs on the List
- Health insurance often does not cover counselling. Many employees cannot easily afford regular sessions with a psychologist.
- Stigma keeps people silent. A confidential, employer-funded service lowers the barrier to asking for help early.
- It supports retention. People stay longer where they feel supported, and mental health support signals that leadership cares.
- It helps managers. Managers gain somewhere to turn when a team member is struggling.
How to Add It
The simplest way is an Employee Assistance Program. The employer funds a set number of confidential sessions per employee with qualified psychologists, in person or online, and receives anonymised reporting. It sits alongside existing benefits and can be scaled to your headcount and budget.
What to Look For
- Qualified psychologists, not generic wellness coaches
- Languages your staff actually speak
- Clear confidentiality terms
- Defined response times
- In-person and online options
- Manager support and critical-incident response

Communicate It Well
A benefit nobody uses has no value. Tell employees what the service is, that it is confidential, how to reach it and that using it will not be held against them. Brief managers on how to refer someone well. Repeat the message regularly, not only at induction.
