If you have seen "EAP" on an HR policy or a benefits list and wondered what it means, this guide gives the short answer first and the detail after.
EAP Full Form
EAP stands for Employee Assistance Program. It is a confidential support service that an employer provides so that staff can speak to a qualified professional about personal or work-related difficulties. Some organisations spell it "Employee Assistance Programme". Do not confuse it with the networking term EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol), which is unrelated.
What Does an EAP Mean for an Employee?
For an employee, an EAP means a private route to a psychologist without paying per session and without going through a manager. Typical reasons people use it include stress, anxiety, low mood, burnout, grief, relationship strain, family pressure and difficulty at work. Sessions can be in person or online, and in the language the person is most comfortable in.
Is an EAP Free?
It is free for the employee, because the employer pays. The organisation agrees a session allowance per person, the response times and the scope with the provider in advance. If the employee needs longer-term or specialist care than the program covers, a good provider will say so and help them find the right next step.
Who Pays and How Is It Priced?
Pricing depends on headcount, how many sessions each person can use, whether workshops, manager support and critical-incident response are included, and how much on-site delivery you need. There is no single standard price. A reputable provider scopes the program with you and sends a written, itemised proposal. Be cautious of a price that cannot be broken down.
How Confidentiality Works
What an employee says stays between them and their psychologist. The employer receives anonymised, aggregate reporting only, such as how many sessions were used and which broad themes are common. The usual ethical limits apply where there is a serious risk of harm or a legal duty.
What Else Is Included?
- Confidential counselling for employees
- Consultation for managers and HR
- Critical-incident support after a serious event
- Workshops on stress, burnout and communication
- Anonymised utilisation reporting
