Many parents search for an "ADHD test" after a teacher says their child cannot sit still or concentrate. There is no single test that proves ADHD. A proper assessment gathers information from several places and rules out other causes. This guide explains the signs, what an assessment involves and who can help.
What ADHD Looks Like in Children
ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a difference in attention, activity level and impulse control that is more intense than expected for the child's age and shows up in more than one setting, such as home and school. Signs often fall into two groups.
- Inattention: trouble keeping attention on tasks or play, careless mistakes, seems not to listen, loses belongings, avoids long homework, easily distracted, forgetful in daily routines.
- Hyperactivity and impulsivity: fidgets or cannot stay seated, runs or climbs at the wrong times, talks excessively, blurts out answers, struggles to wait a turn, interrupts others.
Some children are mainly inattentive, and are often missed, especially girls, because they are quiet and daydream rather than disruptive.
Signs by Age
Preschool: constant motion, very short attention for play, difficulty with group activities, frequent tantrums. Many preschoolers are active, so diagnosis at this age is cautious.
Primary school: difficulty finishing work, messy or incomplete homework, calls from teachers, trouble with friends because of impulsive behaviour.
Teenagers: disorganisation, missed deadlines, restlessness that feels internal, risk-taking, falling grades despite ability.
Why There Is No Single ADHD Test
Online quizzes and checklists can show whether concerns are worth following up, but they cannot diagnose. Attention problems have many causes, including anxiety, poor sleep, learning difficulties, hearing or vision problems, stress at home, bullying, and boredom in a child who is bright. A good assessment looks at all of these.
What a Proper Assessment Includes
- A detailed interview with parents about development, behaviour at home, school, sleep, health and family history.
- Information from school, such as teacher reports and rating scales.
- Standardised rating scales completed by parents and teachers.
- Time with the child, observing attention, activity and behaviour.
- Checks for other causes, such as anxiety, learning difficulties, or medical problems that may need a paediatrician.
At The Meeting Matters, our psychologists carry out structured clinical assessment of attention and learning concerns. We do not prescribe medication. If a medical opinion would help, we will tell you. See our pages on ADHD in children and psychological assessment.
Who Can Diagnose and Treat ADHD in Pakistan?
Practice differs between clinics. Many families begin with a clinical psychologist, who assesses and provides behavioural therapy and parent guidance, and add a paediatrician or psychiatrist if medication is being considered. Check with the clinician about what they can diagnose and prescribe.
What Helps
For most children, the first steps are behaviour strategies at home and school: clear routines, short tasks with breaks, immediate feedback and rewards, reduced distractions, and help with organisation. Parent guidance is a large part of the work. See child behavioral therapy and our child therapy guide for parents.
What If It Is Not ADHD?
Often it is something else, or ADHD alongside something else, such as anxiety or a learning difficulty. An accurate picture helps you choose the right support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a psychologist diagnose ADHD?
Psychologists carry out the assessment and can give a clinical opinion. Whether a formal diagnosis and medication come from a psychologist, paediatrician or psychiatrist depends on the clinic and the setting.
At what age can ADHD be assessed?
Assessment is usually most reliable from about age 5 or 6, though concerns can be discussed earlier.
Is my child just naughty?
Children with ADHD are not choosing to misbehave. Their attention and impulse control develop differently. Strategies work better than punishment.
Can assessment be done online?
Parent interviews and many parts of the assessment can be done online. Your psychologist will tell you if an in-person observation would help.
