ADHD Symptoms in Adults: Signs, Women and What to Do Next

Adult ADHD symptoms include difficulty keeping attention on tasks, disorganisation, forgetfulness, losing things, putting things off, restlessness, talking over others and acting on impulse. For ADHD, these signs have been present since childhood, show up in more than one area of life such as work and home, and are not better explained by something else. ADHD is often missed in adults, especially women, and support can make a big difference.

Inattention Symptoms in Adults

Trouble finishing tasks, getting distracted easily, missing details, forgetting appointments and deadlines, losing keys, phone or documents, finding it hard to start or organise tasks, and avoiding tasks that need sustained effort. Time often slips away.

Hyperactivity and Impulsivity in Adults

In adults, hyperactivity often looks like inner restlessness, fidgeting, difficulty relaxing, always being "on the go", talking a lot, interrupting, impatience, impulsive spending or decisions, and quick frustration.

ADHD in Women

Girls and women are often diagnosed late because their symptoms are more inward: daydreaming, disorganisation, forgetfulness, overwhelm, sensitivity and anxiety. Many women are first treated for anxiety or depression before ADHD is considered.

ADHD, Anxiety and Depression

They overlap and often occur together. Anxiety can cause poor concentration, and ADHD can cause constant stress. A careful assessment looks at your history from childhood, your current difficulties and other conditions. See our page on ADHD tests, symptoms and treatment in Pakistan.

How Assessment and Support Work

Assessment involves a detailed interview, questionnaires and, where possible, information from childhood. Support includes psychoeducation, coaching on organisation and time, CBT for adults with ADHD, and work on related anxiety or low mood. We are psychologists and do not prescribe medication. If a medical opinion would help, we will say so and work alongside your doctor or psychiatrist.
