Signs You Need Therapy: 12 Signs It Is Time to Talk to Someone

You may benefit from therapy if feelings or worries have lasted for weeks, are hard to control, and affect your sleep, work, studies or relationships, or if you feel stuck despite trying on your own. You do not need to be in crisis, and you do not need a diagnosis. Therapy is for anyone who wants support and change, and starting earlier usually makes things easier.

Ready to talk to someone?

12 Signs It May Be Time

1. Worry, sadness or anger most days for more than two weeks. 2. Sleep problems that will not settle. 3. Constant overthinking. 4. Panic attacks or sudden fear. 5. Losing interest in things you used to enjoy. 6. Being irritable or snapping at people you love. 7. Frequent fights or distance in your marriage or family. 8. Using food, screens, smoking or other substances to cope. 9. Difficulty concentrating at work or study. 10. Unexplained headaches, aches or tiredness. 11. A loss, trauma or big change you cannot get past. 12. Feeling stuck, hopeless or like a burden.

Psychologist or Psychiatrist: Which One Do I Need?

A psychologist treats mental health problems through talking therapy and assessment. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication. Many people begin with a psychologist. If symptoms are severe, or a medical opinion would help, a psychiatrist is added. We are psychologists and do not prescribe medication. If a medical opinion would help, we will say so and work alongside your doctor or psychiatrist.

What the First Session Is Like

It is a conversation. You explain what has been happening, what you want to change and any relevant history. The psychologist asks questions, explains how therapy could help and agrees a plan with you. You do not have to share more than you are comfortable with, and what you say is confidential, with legal exceptions where there is a serious risk of harm.

Common Worries About Starting

"Others have bigger problems" or "log kya kahenge" keep many people from starting. Therapy is private, and wanting support is a sign of strength. Online sessions let you start from home.

“I am truly grateful to Ms. Tasmiya Asghar and the team at Meeting Matters. I reached out during one of the most difficult periods of my life while dealing with grief and trying to be the best parent I could be for my children. Ms. Tasmiya's kindness, empathy, and guidance helped me navigate emotions that often felt overwhelming. She helped me understand my feelings, regain perspective, and think through practical ways of supporting my children and myself. I always felt respected, heard, and comfortable during our sessions.
