Anxiety Test: Take the GAD-7 Self-Check

The GAD-7 is a short, widely used anxiety questionnaire with seven questions. For each, think about the last two weeks and score 0 (not at all), 1 (several days), 2 (more than half the days) or 3 (nearly every day). Add up your score: 0 to 4 is minimal, 5 to 9 mild, 10 to 14 moderate and 15 to 21 severe anxiety. A checklist or questionnaire cannot diagnose anything. It only shows whether it is worth talking to a professional.

The Seven Questions

Over the last two weeks, how often have you been bothered by: 1. Feeling nervous, anxious or on edge. 2. Not being able to stop or control worrying. 3. Worrying too much about different things. 4. Trouble relaxing. 5. Being so restless that it is hard to sit still. 6. Becoming easily annoyed or irritable. 7. Feeling afraid, as if something awful might happen.

What Your Score Means

0 to 4: minimal anxiety. 5 to 9: mild anxiety, worth watching and trying self-help. 10 to 14: moderate anxiety, and a good point to speak to a professional. 15 and above: severe anxiety, where support is strongly recommended. A score of 10 or more is commonly used as the point where further assessment is advised.

Limits of Any Online Test

The GAD-7 does not diagnose generalised anxiety, panic disorder, OCD or other conditions, and it does not measure how much anxiety affects your life. Anxiety can also be caused or worsened by medical issues such as thyroid problems. A psychologist can assess you properly.

What to Do With Your Result

If your score is 10 or more, or you are struggling at any score, talk to a psychologist. Read about anxiety symptoms, panic attacks and anxiety treatment. You can also take the depression self-check, since anxiety and low mood often occur together.
