Mental health at work is no longer a topic organisations can leave to individuals. Long hours, job insecurity, commuting, family expectations and constant connectivity all reach the workplace. This guide sets out what HR teams in Pakistan can do in practical terms, without needing a large budget to begin.
Know the Warning Signs
- A usually reliable employee becomes withdrawn, irritable or inconsistent.
- Rising absence, lateness or presenteeism (present but not functioning).
- Visible exhaustion, or a drop in quality of work.
- Conflict in a team that keeps coming back.
- Unexplained resignations from the same team or manager.
Our guide to workplace burnout covers the individual picture in more detail.
Train Managers First
Managers are usually the first to notice and the first to be asked for help. A short briefing can teach them how to start a supportive conversation, what not to say, how to refer someone and how to look after their own limits. This is often the highest-value, lowest-cost step.
Give People a Confidential Route
Employees will not use support if they believe their manager or HR will find out. A confidential service run by qualified psychologists, outside the reporting line, is the foundation. That is what an Employee Assistance Program provides.
Plan for Serious Events
Decide in advance what happens after a workplace accident, a death in the team or a sudden restructure. Having a provider who can respond quickly, with support for individuals and for the team, is far better than improvising.
Look at the Workload, Not Only the Person
Counselling helps people cope, but it does not replace fixing an unsustainable workload. Use anonymised reporting and exit data to see where pressure is concentrated, then address the cause.
A Simple First Ninety Days
- Brief managers and HR on warning signs and referral.
- Put a confidential support service in place and communicate it clearly.
- Run a stress or resilience workshop for the highest-pressure team.
- Agree a response plan for serious events.
- Review anonymised themes quarterly.
