Dialectical Behavior Therapy

A type of talking therapy is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). It has been adapted specifically for people who experience emotions very strongly. The goal of DBT is to assist you in comprehending and accepting your challenging emotions, learning coping mechanisms, and developing the capacity to make healthy adjustments in your life.

Dialectical behavior therapy is being used at The Meeting Matters to treat patients with severe or persistent mental health problems. Self-harm, eating disorders, addiction, posttraumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder are among the concerns that DBT therapy addresses. DBT was initially developed to treat borderline personality disorder symptoms such as persistent suicide ideation.

Individual therapy, skills training groups, phone coaching, and a therapist consulting team make up the typical dialectical behavior therapy program at The Meeting Matters. Participants in regular DBT meet once a week for counseling and a skills development session. Through group work and homework assignments, the DBT therapy is intended to support patients in developing behavioral skills. People can put their newly acquired skills into daily practice thanks to these assignments.

What Are the 4 Stages of DBT?

The four stages of treatment for dialectical behavior therapy at The Meeting Matters are as follows:

Stage 1: At the beginning of our treatment, the most severe and harmful behaviors are addressed first. This may involve issues like suicide
thoughts or self-harming behaviours.

Stage 2: After this, the focus of treatment shifts to problems that have an impact on a person's quality of life, such as their capacity for managing their emotions, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

Stage 3: The following phase focuses on problems with self-worth and social interactions.

Stage 4: At this stage, DBT therapy is concentrated on assisting patients in making the most of their lives, including identifying strategies for enhancing happiness, fortifying relationships, and pursuing their life objectives.

What to Expect:

Individual therapy sessions and weekly skill-focused group training meetings are typical components of the treatment plan offered at The Meeting Matters. Individual sessions typically last an hour, while group meetings—often made up of four to ten people—are intended to last between an hour and a half and two hours. Patients are advised to practice their abilities between sessions because DBT is a present-oriented, skill-based therapy. Patients can anticipate homework assignments, which may, for example, emphasize taking particular, tangible actions to handle relationship issues.

Numerous CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) approaches are incorporated into DBT therapy. It aids patients in identifying and combating the several types of erroneous thinking that underlie unpleasant emotions and lead to undesirable behavior. DBT includes mindfulness training as a key component. It also slows down emotional response, allowing patients to stay present-focused and adopt healthy coping mechanisms when confronted with stressful events.

In order to assist patients, become more aware of their emotions, learn which situations are particularly challenging for them, and utilize this knowledge to control their behavior, patients are advised to keep a journal monitoring their emotions and impulses. Patients engage in problem-solving during individual sessions by actively addressing behaviors that might have produced a favorable outcome as they reflect on challenging circumstances and emotions they encountered the previous week. Additionally, if a crisis arises, patients frequently have access to psychologists between sessions for crisis skills coaching.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

There is at least one individual therapy session per week. The focus of a DBT therapy session typically centers on a recent, high-priority event. The therapist works with the patient to identify all the circumstances that contributed to and followed the event, and they then come up with new responses that they can practice in future situations. To enhance a person's life in four key areas—mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance—the DBT skills-training component teaches them particular abilities. The Meeting Matters' highly trained therapists are accessible for consultation between sessions to assist clients in using new skills to stop the use of troublesome behaviors. The weekly consultation team is also intended to boost therapists' motivation and commitment to DBT therapy principles by providing them with the support they require for working with suicidal clients.

Mr. Naushad has really been helpful as he seems to understand the youngsters’ perspective. He also trained us, the family members how to treat our son. I’ll strongly recommend this clinic to others.
