Understanding Anxiety and its Impact on Mental Health

We all feel anxious from time to time. I’m sure you’ve experienced anxiety before an exam or a first date, for instance. However, in those contexts, anxiety is a normal, healthy response to stress in our environment and nothing to worry about.

But for some people, anxiety can take over their lives. They find that they just can’t stop worrying, and spend all their time in a state of heightened stress. This can have profound repercussions for their mental and physical health and well-being. They feel profoundly distressed much of the time and can develop a range of physical symptoms, from gastrointestinal distress to skin problems.

Understanding Anxiety and its Impact on Mental Health

We all feel anxious from time to time. I’m sure you’ve experienced anxiety before an exam or a first date, for instance. However, in those contexts, anxiety is a normal, healthy response to stress in our environment and nothing to worry about.

But for some people, anxiety can take over their lives. They find that they just can’t stop worrying, and spend all their time in a state of heightened stress. This can have profound repercussions for their mental and physical health and well-being. They feel profoundly distressed much of the time and can develop a range of physical symptoms, from gastrointestinal distress to skin problems.

The Various Forms Anxiety Takes:

If, like many people, you have generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), you feel anxious about lots of things, most of the time, rather than worrying about one specific event. You feel worried, you find it hard to concentrate and sleep and your appetite might be affected.

If you have panic disorder, you suffer from periodic bouts of debilitating panic, even when there’s nothing to worry about at all. You may find that you start to panic about when the next panic attack is going to come, creating a vicious circle. You may also suffer from physical symptoms, including dizziness, sweating, heart palpitations, and more.

Some people suffer from very specific types of anxiety, such as anxiety about a particular thing or situation, like driving, spiders, or enclosed spaces. This sort of anxiety disorder is known as a simple phobia.

Anxiety about health can also be extremely problematic.

Other forms of anxiety are post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The former involves stress and anxiety resulting from a traumatic experience that continues even a long time afterward, and OCD involves obsessive thoughts and behaviors.

Treatments:

If you suffer from an anxiety disorder, you will be relieved to know that there are treatments, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDT), with a focus on developing positive thinking, acquiring mindfulness, and strategies to help contain and manage the problem. While medication can help in the short term, for long-term relief psychological therapy for anxiety can be hugely rewarding.
